The Standardized Naughty Test

Are you aware that in Washington State, kids take a standardized naughty test. Children are asked questions relating to sexuality, eating disorders and drug use. In California, a family sued the school district because their 7 year old daughter was subjected to a similar test. Some parents believe that asking children sexual questions that make them feel uncomfortable could be construed as abusive. Here's the scoop on the Washington State version of the test. The Healthy Youth Survey is voluntary and they claim that the results are released to the public. I was trying to find the results, because the only school district I found that mentioned it stated that if a parent wanted to see sample questions, they'd have to come into the office to view them. It just sounds wrong, doesn't it? Apparently the "participation" results are available to the public. Unless my detective skills are just not up to par. I really don't care how many schools in a district took the test, why do they bother compiling information that doesn't meet a parent's desire to know exactly what strange and twisted ideas they're impressing upon children?

OOH- newsflash-- I found the local results from 2006. You can find the state results here. I will post the Yakima results on the Homeschooling in Yakima blog.

>>>> For most children, the ages 6 and 7 represent some of the most important – and interesting! – developmental changes that will ever occur in their lives. It is the age of questions, trust-building, first real understandings of death and history, first confrontation with the need for experience in progressing with learning challenges. We explore together what it is like to be 6 and 7 all over again!

>>>> Hanging on for the Ride: Homeschooling WITH the Gifted Child
> (“How to talk so your child will think you have something worth listening to!") Examines three kinds of giftedness, reviews – with group participation – the hallmarks of gifted children, and provides hints on how to work effectively with them to appropriately enrich their education. The end of the talk is reserved for a resource sharing session.

> The Curriculum of Beauty
> Brown University President Ruth Simmons once wrote, “Nothing is so beautiful, nothing so moving, as the observance of a mind at work.” What if, amidst all the focus on how to ensure our children have the necessary basic skills, we were to conceive of homeschooling as an aesthetic matter, helping our children to find ways to embrace the beautiful in their world, in their relationships with others, and in themselves? How can we go about with our kids in cultivating an inner harmony that will lead them to a life worth living? And can we go along for the ride?

> We all want the best possible education for our children. But sometimes the images of school we hold in our minds limit us from acting fully upon that which, deep down, we already know. We will explore some of these images together, and increase our self-confidence in helping our kids and our family pursue our dreams and aspirations. Homeschool Week June 8th-14th

Dear Homeschool Friends:

Once again the governor has officially declared "Homeschool Week"!

Each year the Washington Homeschool Organization applies for state-wide recognition of Washington homeschoolers. This year Governor Gregoire signed the attached proclamation stating that June 8 - 14, 2008 is Washington State Homeschool Week.

The proclamation will appear in the next issue of "The WHO's News", it's on the WHO website, http://www.washhomeschool.org/ and will be displayed at the WHO Booth during their annual convention, June 13 and 14, 2008 at the Western Washington Fair Grounds.

What can you and your family do to raise awareness of homeschooling by using the Washington State Homeschool Week Proclamation?

WATCH Convention- August 8th and 9th

The Washington Association of Teaching Christian Homes is currently accepting registrations for their 14th annual Conference. The theme this year is Family Learning Adventure and it sounds like they definitely have an adventure of a weekend planned for families. The conference will be at the Seattle Pacific University. Don't worry about a hotel, though, because starting at only $25 per person, you can sleep in college dorm room. What could be more fun? Registration is dirt cheap, ($50 for WATCH members) I don't know how they do it. The line up of speakers and activities is just phenomenal. They have program for children, teens, dads and moms. When you register, be sure to let them know you heard it here (Homeschooling in Washington Blog) so they can remember to tell us about these things in the future... When you register online, they simply require a deposit and then you can make little payments online until it's paid in full. The first 225 families to register will receive a free "Electing a President" board game. See you there!

If you're looking to see Diana Waring speaking, she'll be in Bremerton Sat May 24th to speak at the used curriculum fair and in Oak Harbor on June 2 to speak for a support group.

Welcome to Homeschooling in Washington

Welcome! I have been a homeschool mother/teacher in Washington State for over five years. Over two years ago I was given the privilege of serving as the president of our local homeschool organization. I have learned a lot through this experience. Mostly about what how much I still have to learn.

I have invited the best, brightest, funniest, most talented, most gifted, most knowledgeable, experts on homeschooling in Washington to join me as authors of this blog. My goal is to sit back and learn from the best of the best.

Thank you for joining me.
